Clownfish
(Amphiprion Ocellaris)
Clownfish (Amphiprion ocellaris), or simply “Nemo,” is a reef icon recognized worldwide. Native to the warm, shallow lagoons of the Indo-Pacific, it thrives among the swaying tentacles of anemones, forming a lifelong symbiotic bond that offers both protection and partnership. Growing to about 3.5 inches - or up to 4.3 in the wild - it swims with short, deliberate flutters, rarely straying far from its host. An omnivore by nature, it feeds on plankton, algae, and meaty scraps carried by the current. It prefers moderate flow and the dappled lighting of coral shallows. Fascinatingly, all clownfish begin life as male, with the dominant in a pair transitioning to female — a reproductive strategy known as protandrous hermaphroditism. Easy to care for and widely aquacultured, this social and hardy species adds both personality and ecological charm to peaceful reef systems and its symbiotic dance with anemones remains one of the ocean’s most memorable spectacles. With a lifespan often reaching 10 to 20 years, the clownfish is both an ambassador for reef life and a captivating addition to any peaceful tank.
